Propane Safety and FAQ

Propane Safety:

When it comes to keeping your home heated, safety is a primary concern. Did you know that propane is one of the safest options for home heating and appliances? Read our propane safety facts below and see how your family can benefit from choosing propane.

  • Propane tanks are 20 times more puncture resistant than tanks filled with ethanol, methanol or gasoline. These tanks are constructed from carbon steel, under the procedures developed by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
  • Propane cylinders are equipped with a device that cuts off the filling process when the propane tank has reached 80 percent of its liquid capacity. This prevents the propane tank from becoming over-pressurized.
  • Propane has the lowest flammability rating compared to any alternative fuel.
  • Propane leaks are easy to detect and won't go unnoticed. With its strong pungent smell that imitates the scent of rotten eggs, propane leaks are easily sniffed out.
  • Propane is eco-friendly and will not contaminate your home's water or soil.
  • Unlike other fuels such as gasoline, propane cannot be ingested. This is because propane is vaporized instantly when released from its container. Propane leaks dissipate into the air without forming any unwanted and dangerous puddles.
  • Compared to gasoline's ignition temperature of 430 to 500 degrees, propane is safer and will not ignite until the air reaches at least 940 degrees Fahrenheit.

Is propane economical?
Yes! According to the U.S. Department of Energy, heating a home in the U.S. with propane in recent years has cost much less than heating with electricity. Also, over time, propane hot water heaters can cost one-third less to operate and recover water twice as quickly as electric water heaters.

Is propane warm?
Yes! Propane heating is much warmer than electric heat. A propane heating gas furnace heats air to about 130 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit and operates in short intervals to minimize operating costs. An electric heat pump produces heat below body temperature (98.6°F), so the air actually feels cool when placing your hand in front of a vent.

Is propane dependable?
Yes! Propane can be stored safely in a propane tank on your property, while electricity is subject to power outages. That's why propane is the perfect fuel for emergency backup generators. Reliable propane works when and where other energy sources don't because it goes where "the grid" doesn't go.

What can I use propane for?
Propane can be used to power many things both inside and outside your house.
